“I appreciate the reverence Emily brings to both the work she does and to me as a woman. She is so clear on what she has to offer and receiving this loving support has been a gift. This isn’t the typical care that I’ve found most doulas offering. It’s deep, deep wisdom and true healing on physical, energetic, and spiritual levels.”

Closing of the Bones Ceremony

a client wrapped in rebozos in closing of the bones ceremony in Boulder, Colorado

In this beautiful ceremony, which typically occurs at least 40 days postpartum but can happen anytime a new mother needs it, the mother receives traditional Yucatec Maya healing work and is then swaddled and wrapped in a cocoon of rebozos (scarves), physically sealing her body/womb, and restoring her energy centers. Friends and sisters of the mother are welcome to attend to support this ceremony. This is a traditional postpartum ceremony to help Mama come back to herself and close the portal after birth. It is a rite of passage that blesses, honors, and nurtures the mother. Physically, your bones widen to let your babies through. There is also a vast opening that happens spiritually, emotionally, and mentally during the pregnancy and birthing process. Your spirit travels to the edges of the universe and back to bring your baby into the world. The closing of the bones ceremony is a potent way to close the portal and anchor in your new reality as a mother. It also brings you back to yourself as a strong and capable woman. Closing of the Bones can also be performed after miscarriages, abortions, or for moments of big life transition. The ceremony takes 2.5-3 hours.

Yucatec Maya Healing

I offer Maya Healing Sessions inspired by the teachings of traditional Belizean healer Ms. Beatrice Torres Waight. I have been studying with Ann Drucker for the past 2 years in this beautiful women’s healing tradition, and studied energy and birthwork for many years prior. Sessions can include:

  • Shamanic work with your compassionate helping spirits

  • Plant brushing and healings

  • Ceremonial, hands-on healing/bodywork

  • Reiki / energy work

  • Mayan abdominal massage

  • Herbal foot bath or spiritual plant bath (seasonal)

About Miss Beatrice

Beatrice Torres Waight was born in the caul on January 18th, 1948 in the village of Santa Familia, Belize. Her family migrated from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico during the caste war in the late 1800’s.
In Yucateca Maya culture, being born in the caul (amniotic sac) is the sign of a healer. As far back as she could remember, Miss Beatrice was connected to the spiritual world and always interested in healing plants. Her Grandmother and her mother were Maya midwives from whom she learned herbal remedies and massage. Her father was the village curandero. As mother of nine children, she was a traditional village healer in Santa Familia. She relieved the physical, emotional and spiritual pain of those who came to her Healing Hut. Miss Beatrice also taught her Yucateca Maya healing ways to students from all over the world. She truly believed earth-centered healing benefits all people. Miss Beatrice raised her children to believe in themselves and be proud of their Yucateca Maya heritage. Her radiant smile, outrageous sense of humor, vast wisdom, deep strength, keen intuition and enormous heart are still cherished. Miss Beatrice passed away on October 3rd, 2010, but her love and teachings are forever alive.

Blessingway Ceremony

A Blessingway Ceremony, or Mother Blessing, is a celebration of pregnancy and becoming a mother that focuses loving attention and intention on the mother-to-be. During a Blessingway, a group of the mother’s close friends will gather to honor her pregnancy and journey into motherhood. They will offer words of wisdom around preparing for birth and postpartum and often include a ceremony to mark the occasion. Blessingways are also incredibly powerful prior to marriage. I facilitate Blessingways by bringing together your circle of women, crafting the flow of the ceremony (with input from you), and holding sacred space through altar creation, song, plant blessings, prayer and invocation. (2-3 hours total.)
